Success story of Ogretmen Hosiery (PENTI) with CANIAS ERP

March 2006 - Turkey

Mr. Tayfun Karakök, IT Manager of Ogretmen Hosiery (PENTI), talks about their ERP transition decisions, the choice of reason CANIAS ERP, from critical factors with ERP projects, he evaluates the effects of CANIAS ERP with Penti's success .

Why is an ERP system needed?

As the traditional "produce-sell" dilemma changed into customer requirements, delivery times and preferences depending on the changing conditions, producers had to fulfill controlling and planning needs with this regards.

When detailed costing calculations are added too, it was necessary to "provide that data are obtained automatically or at least semi-automatically" to assist making strategic decisions within daily working course.
As an inevitable result, we wanted to revise our own system according to new conditions and purposes. That's why an ERP system was needed.,

Did you have any preparations for the company during the process regarding the election of software?

Preparation process starts with the decision to change to ERP system. What you want is more important that what software companies give you so that each topic has to be detailed prior to demonstrations and meetings. Production phases, flows, certificates and etc. have to be clarified within this period, which is also called self-arrangement of company before ERP. We tried to use this period as good as possible, as Penti.

Can you tell us the reasons why you preferred CANIAS ERP software?

There are some companies that provide ERP solutions with certain quality criteria achieved in the market. Someone who is able to fulfill your needs, speak the same language with you and who is just one of you is one the reasons that deeply affect the success of your project. CANIAS ERP has been a smiling face amongst others thanks to its consultant staff and TROIA language and program developed by itself. As a result, we decided to walk together relying on them and what they offered.

If any, what were the net targets you aimed per project? (i.e. production, costs, efficiency...)

Targets we aimed per project were correct traceability of production, leveling the costs and efficiency at targeted criteria and stock management. Products are produced in this manner at those manufacturing companies but it is of great importance at which costs this product has been used and how we can produce this product at a shorter time and at less costs. These factors directly influence on your power to compete at the market. Thanks to our project we can observe the quantity of our semi-products at any level and our ability to manage those products to the date of delivery according to our capacity.
Now we are proceeding with rationalist and stable steps to the targets we aimed per project.

Some say that ERP projects are long and troublesome processes. Could you please tell us about your project time and period with CANIAS ERP?

Our project is an ongoing project. Long and troublesome processes with great projects depend on your team. You can shorten such a long process and minimize troubles due to a team, which is able to control the events and is self-assured.

Our production follow-up, which was completely manual before, becomes online traceability with wireless barcode readers in a short period of time. Old habits may create some problems during this transition but compared to its advantages it is clear that it will bring great advantages both for the management and end-user because everything will begin flowing on the system and every responsible person will be certain. As I have already mentioned, here in-corporation discipline is important.

What were the critical factors that affected your success in ERP project you began actively using? What do you suggest to the companies that are in textile and ready-made clothes sector and intending to construct ERP system?

The most significant factor to properly realize and achieve ERP Project is Team Work. To avoid lack of coordination between departments, who should do which work, and the areas of responsibilities must be clearly and explicitly highlighted.

ERP does not necessarily provide each company with facility and speed at any section. ERP is a tool to develop vision and therefore managers are needed who can make the companies adopt such troubles and support the system stably. If you can overcome this problem, you will catch the effort for a company for the project to be successful and you will have no other handicaps.

What were the factors for Penti project to progress successfully?

The first thing in mind for ERP projects is that the projects are long termed and difficulty. In fact, it is not wrong to liken this process to a heart transfer operation. Success of this operation is correlated with the harmony, knowledge of team and the preparedness of patient for such an operation. In ERP projects such preparedness and will of customers for such a process, nonstop support by top management, accord between customer and consultant company are critical success factors for the project. We have proved ourselves in textile sector in PENTI project with CANIAS ERP and we will continue the same success process for our future projects.

Seizing the recent technology in Çorlu for its ongoing production, our factory was established in 1994.
